As part of the Facebook Journalism Project, we are committed to improving our training and tools for journalists. Today, we are launching the Facebook for Journalists Certificate, a three-course curriculum designed by the Poynter Institute and Facebook. With these free online courses, Facebook and Poynter seek to make it easier for journalists to utilize Facebook and Instagram in their daily work — from newsgathering to storytelling to engaging with their followers.
The courses are co-written by Poynter and Facebook, with a final assessment designed by Poynter to test proficiency of the curriculum. Course enrollees who pass Poynter’s written assessment will receive a certificate of completion, recognized by both Facebook and Poynter, via Blueprint, our e-learning system. This curriculum is important to us because it pairs product knowledge, case studies, and tips from Facebook with journalistic guidance from Poynter.
“You can’t do journalism these days without Facebook. It’s a privilege to team up on this definitive guide for journalists,” said Kelly McBride, vice president of the Poynter Institute. “The information contained in these courses is fundamental to reporting and distributing the news.”
In our News on Facebook events and in visits to local newsrooms, we heard from journalists that having access to more Facebook product tips and tools would be helpful for their day-to-day job responsibilities. And we know that Facebook has become a key platform for connecting people to the stories they care about. This curriculum should ensure that journalists understand how to use our products and platforms. We’re committed to providing high quality and timely education and training opportunities for journalists. With that in mind, these courses in the curriculum will be regularly updated to reflect new products, features, case studies and learnings.
We also welcome feedback on the certificate curriculum. Journalists who complete these courses are encouraged to join Facebook’s News Media & Publishing group, where they can suggest new courses, ask questions about Facebook products, connect with colleagues in the industry, share best practices and hear about case studies and product updates.
