The Funded Project:
NAJA’s goal is to increase the Indigenous voice in newsrooms from 0.2 percent to 2 percent within the next 10 years by targeting Indigenous student journalists with specialized training and mentorship.
In Their Own Words:
NAJA believes that accurate and contextual reporting about Indigenous people and communities is necessary to overcome the biases and stereotypes portrayed in popular and mainstream media.
With Native American journalists constituting less than 0.2 percent of mainstream newsrooms, NAJA aims to achieve greater newsroom equity in order to combat mainstream media’s lack of or ill-informed coverage.
NAJA’s project goal for the Native American Journalism Fellowship is to increase the Native voice in newsrooms from 0.2 percent to 2 percent within the next 10 years. To achieve this goal, we need to develop the careers of hundreds of Indigenous media professionals equipped to compete and excel in the industry.
