The Funded Project:

Conduct a multi-city listening tour combining live events with online surveys to understand gaps in local education information.

In Their Own Words:

Chalkbeat provides high-quality local coverage of public education in seven states (and growing) in pursuit of education equity. One of our key audiences is parents, especially from underserved and low-income communities. To reach the broadest array of parents possible, we are planning a multi-city “Listening Tour,” in which we hold live events (15-45 people) and deploy online surveys, inviting parents who both do and don’t already read Chalkbeat to share what they want and need to know about the local education landscape. We will use what we learn to plan/strategize on how to best inform and engage underserved parents over the next year and beyond. In particular, we believe there is a huge information gap in school districts that offer broad school choice, increasing the complexity for families with the least amount of resources. Chalkbeat intends to fill this gap with responsive reporting and product development.
